Clan MacKenzie possesed Kintail in the 14th centruy and take their name from a cheif named Kenneth who lived in the 13th century.  They were a strong and powerful clan who fueded with their neighbors, and fought against the Macdonalds at the Battle of Blair-na-park in 1491.  In 1607 they acquired the lands of Lochcarron and Lochalsh, and in 1609, Kenneth MacKenzie was created Lord MacKenzie.  The Mackenzies fought in the 1715 Jacobite Rising and at the Battle of Glensheils in 1719.  They were a numerous clan, and in the 18th century could muster over 2500 fighting men.
